Thank you to the many neighbours who shared their thoughts about the recent Traffic Calming Pilot Project on Let’sTalkColwood.ca.
As noted in our letters on April 8 and 21, 2021, the City of Colwood conducted a temporary traffic calming pilot project this summer by adding road markings on Adye Road to remind drivers that bicycles and vehicles must share the road and visually narrow the driving surface to encourage drivers to slow down.
The traffic calming measure was in place for approximately 90 days and evaluated on an ongoing basis as neighbours shared their views by joining the conversation on LetsTalkColwood.ca.
Staff presented a summary of the input received to Council on August 30, 2021. Most of the community comments regarding the road markings were appreciative of this first step, but many called for more to be done to protect cyclists.
As a result, Council resolved to make the road markings permanent in advance of plans to further enhance this route for cycling.
It is important to note that Adye Road is one of Council’s priority routes for active transportation upgrade, with a plan to scope and design a Metchosin Road/Adye Road Bikeway connecting cyclists to the Galloping Goose.
The community’s input into this summer’s four traffic calming pilot projects has helped to clarify concerns, assess the effctiveness of various approaches and guide Council decisions about permanent improvements in Colwood neighbourhoods.

City staff have reviewed, scoped and assessed how cars, bikes and pedestrians use Adye Road and would like to reinforce this route as a cycling connection between the Galloping Goose and surrounding neighbourhoods. To do this:
Road markings called ‘sharrows’ will be painted on both sides of Adye Road between Kelly Road and Hatley Memorial Gardens.
The painted ‘sharrows’ will remind drivers that bicycles and vehicles must share the road. The paint will also visually narrow the driving surface of the roadway which is one method for encouraging drivers to slow down.
90-Day Timeline: This traffic calming measure will be implemented within the next four weeks. It will remain in place as a trial for approximately 90 days, and then temporary measures not accepted will be removed. We'll be evaluating it on an ongoing basis over the 90 days with your input.
